Maintaining Your Pool throughout Winter

As the cold, wet weather sets in, going for a swim is probably the last thing you want to do. Many of us simply cover our pools and dream of the day they can be opened up to the sun again. Even though your pool will not receive the same thoroughfare as it did in the warmer months, regular maintenance is still required to keep it in top condition for the first glimpses of summer.

Closing Your Pool for the Winter

It is recommended that you cover your pool in the winter months. However, it is important to be mindful that pools shouldn't be covered until the temperature has dropped below 18 degrees. This is to avoid algae growth or other water problems. If your pool is heated, you may want to keep it running through the winter but be sure to continue your maintenance plan; testing chlorine levels, managing pH and regularly cleaning the pool to avoid a build-up of debris.

If you opt to cover your swimming pool, make sure you give it a thorough clean beforehand. This includes scrubbing the walls and removing any debris that could cause problems to your water in the months until you open it up again.

Before the lid goes on, you will want to check the chemical levels and pH balance. Use a non-chlorine pool shock treatment and run the pump and filter to evenly distribute the treatment throughout the pool. No matter how long the winter weather lasts, you should still check the pool chemistry every 2 months when it is not being used. Unbalanced pool chemistry can cause the growth of algae and bacteria which are harmful; both to you and to the health of your pool.
