Swimming is a great way to keep fit and healthy all year round. Our pool, much like our bodies, needs to be kept healthy too. An unclean pool not only breeds bacteria, it can lead to serious health complications for a swimmer. If you want to get the most out of your pool, keeping it clean will allow you to use it all the time.

Chlorine Isn’t for Everybody

Not everybody is able to tolerate chlorine. In fact, if you put too much of the chemical in your pool, it becomes un-swimmable. Over-chlorination can cause health issues such as:

  • Asthma attacks
  • Stinging and red eyes
  • Lung irritation
  • Skin Irritation

Too much chlorine in your pool will also lower the pH levels in the water. This causes acidity that corrodes metal pipes, pool equipment and concrete surfaces. This will hurt your hip pocket and put a fast end to your summer adventures.

Luckily, there are alternative ways to keep your pool clean. Whether it’s for health, pool safety or environmental concerns, here are a few other options you can consider.

Eco-Friendly Alternatives

Whether you have an in-ground pool, a concrete pool, or you’re preparing to make a purchase, it is your responsibility to keep your pool clean.

Salt Water

If chlorine isn’t right for your pool, then salt water chlorination should be your first alternative. Salt water is a cheaper alternative than chlorine for pool maintenance. There are no harsh effects and it is generally considered better for the environment. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency considers chlorine a pesticide due to its potent side effects!

Robotic Cleaners

Technology is changing quickly and that means the days of having to purchase a whole new pool is over. With robot cleaners, you can forget about hiring a pool boy too.

Robot cleaners work best in concrete pools and inground pools. At our pool shop in Penrith, we stock a great range of robotic cleaners, including the ever popular Maytronics Dolphin cleaners. They are designed for optimal suction and the high powered pressure system can easily suck up debris.

Heat Pump

Heat pumps are a great way to clean your pool and Sunlover heat pumps are some of the best on the market. Keeping the water in your pool warm also means you can enjoy a swim in the winter months!

As a family owned pool shop in Penrith, we pride ourselves on delivering friendly service to our customers. For more invaluable information about pool maintenance, keep exploring our blog or have a chat to our team.
